Celebrating Nature Conservation Day, July 28th at Hawthorn Handmade Skincare

The Hawthorn Studio is surrounded by farmland rich in biodiversity. Growing up surrounded, I always had an awareness of the importance of conserving our natural heritage. This set me on the path that would one day lead to the launch of Hawthorn Skincare.‌

We farm on land that is officially designated Area of Special Conservation and Natural Heritage Area. The studio is close to the shores of Lough Carra, which is the largest example of a marl bottom lake in Europe. Our farm is participating in the Cara Life Project. This is a new EU-funded program to help improve the water quality of Lough Carra.

Ultimately, what we put onto our skin eventually gets washed into our waterways. This is one of the reasons we do not use synthetic ingredients in our products. Our Hand and Body Washes are 100% natural and the perfect eco-friendly swop for your bathroom.

The land around the lake is limestone pavement, this is the same habitat as the Burren in Co. Clare except we have more grassland and less exposed pavement. This type of habitat is rich in biodiversity and we have an abundance of native wildflowers and even some rare orchids like the Bee Orchid and Frog Orchid. Many of our native orchids are easy to overlook, but I often find that once I spot one, you are sure to find a host of them under your nose. The limestone grassland is the perfect habitat for a many of our native wildflowers to thrive.

Last year, we started using an innovative natural method of weed control on the farm. Dock Beatles, provided by a local company, Green Submarine, are a sustainable natural solution to dock control. Docks are a type of weed which are normally controlled by chemical means. Dock beetles are natural and native predators of docks. A healthy population of Dock beetles removes the need for spraying pesticides on farms. The difference in the first year is already noticeable. And we should continue to see results as the beetle population grows.

Being a farmer’s daughter, I find myself called on to help with many tasks. To keep my hands formulators hands nice and soft, I always have a jar of Soothe Hand Balm within easy reach. Even my Dad, Seamus, applies his Hand Balm every day!
