Essential Oils
Elaine Kennedy
As the owner and producer of Hawthorn & Rose, it is incredibly important to me that that my customers are fully informed in terms of what you are putting on your skin. A previous post, Our Ingredients - No nasties, explained about INCI names and their purpose. As well as requiring ingredients to be listed on product labels by their INCI name, some of the natural components of essential oils must also be listed. That’s because some of these natural components are known allergens which can cause reactions in susceptible people. It is important to remember that even the mildest natural ingredients can cause sensitisation in certain people and we recommend using a small amount of product for 24 hours to check for any reactions. However, the quantity of essential oils used in our products falls well within safe usage recommendations and our recipes have been carefully formulated to produce mild products.

All Hawthorn & Rose products are made from 100% natural ingredients. However, a quick glance at our product labels may make you doubt this and you may struggle to recognise any of the ingredients listed. Thats because ingredients must be listed by their INCI name on all products. INCI names were introduced to ensure that consumers have a consistent means of identifying the contents of cosmetics using a common language. So for example Shea Butter will be listed as Butyrospermum Parkii. To add to the confusion, the components of essential oils must also be listed. Therefore, while Lavender is listed as Lavandula Angustifolia, its components Geraniol, Limonene and Linalool must also be listed.
To make it easier, here is a list of our most commonly used ingredients and their INCI names:
Butters & Oils
Shea Butter - Butyrospermum Parkii
Apricot Kernel Oil - Prunus Armeniaca Kernal Oil
Wheatgerm Oil - Triticum Vulgare Germ Oil
Mango Butter - Mangifera Indica Seed Oil
Castor Oil - Ricinus Communis Seed Oil
Rosehip Oil - Rosa Canina Fruit Oil
Beeswax - Cera Alba
